Lady Gaga is ready to be a pop star again, drops a surprise music video for “John Wayne”

After announcing yesterday that she would be joining RuPaul’s Drag Race season nine as a guest judge for the premiere episode, Lady Gaga released a music video for her song “John Wayne” from her album Joanne this afternoon.

The video dropped on Apple Music ahead of her interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, and it’s a return to the fun and bombastic Gaga we fell in love with back during The Fame and The Fame Monster; the video sort of feels distantly related to “Telephone.” Directed by Jonas Akerlund, it’s high energy, full of color and unapologetically Gaga, a stark contrast from the more muted and simpler videos for “Perfect Illusion” and “Million Reasons.”

Whatever your opinions on ARTPOP or even Gaga’s collaborations with Tony Bennett, it’s feels like it’s been awhile since she’s fully embraced being a pop star. And while she’s still busy furthering her acting resumé with filming the remake of A Star Is Born (which she touched on in her Beats 1 interview) and prepares for world tour, this video feels undeniably electric, like she’s reenergized and ready to dip her toes back into the world of pop.
