Donald Trump has named Betsy DeVos as his pick for Secretary of Education, who is famous for her anti-gay marriage activism.
ABC reported that in 2012, DeVos’ family donated $500,000 to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which is an anti-gay marriage group and “was one of the leading advocates against same-sex marriage initiatives in eight states.”
But if that weren’t enough the DeVos family has been financially involved in a number of Republican candidates who have run for major positions, according to Mother Jones:
“They have helped fund nearly every prominent Republican running for national office and underwritten a laundry list of conservative campaigns on issues ranging from charter schools and vouchers to anti-gay-marriage and anti-tax ballot measures. ‘There’s not a Republican president or presidential candidate in the last 50 years who hasn’t known the DeVoses,’ says Saul Anuzis, a former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party.”
Oh but wait, there’s more! In addition to her mother being a champion of Prop 8, Betsy DeVos made a point of personally contributing to banning same sex marriage in Michigan; she and her husband donated more than $200,000 to the cause.
The Trump campaign has tried to reach out to the LGBTQ community, with Trump himself claiming he would not personally try and repeal same-sex marriage (despite once saying he would “consider” it). And while many of his surrogates have tried to say he is the first president to enter the White House with a pro-LGBTQ stance, his actions are suggesting he isn’t at all concerned with preserving, and pushing for, more civil rights.
Besides, his claims he won’t touch same-sex marriage does little to assure people when he’s assembling a team of people who have devoted their political careers to fighting it every step of the way.
