If there’s one thing we can say about Donald Trump, it’s that he’s been consistent with his cabinet picks. And by consistent, we mean that every single pick has been staunchly anti-LGBTQ. His latest addition, Tom Price, is no exception and might actually be his most anti-LGBTQ pick yet (not counting Mike Pence, of course).
Price, who will assumedly fill the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services, is a firm believer that LGBTQ rights, and reproductive rights, are “a huge cost driver” to the state budget.
“The consequences of activity that has been seen as outside the norm are real and must be explored completely… [before] moving forward with any social legislation that would alter things,” Price once said.
Not crazy enough for you yet? Don’t worry, we’re just getting started. Price also worked closely with Rabbi Noson Leiter, who firmly believes that the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York (prior to it being decided on by the Supreme Court) caused Hurricane Sandy. Yes, you read that right. Price agreed that laws that “promote some homosexual-agenda item… should take into account the tremendous medical health impact and economic impact that promoting such a lifestyle will result in,” according to New Now Next
In addition to receiving a big fat 0 from the Human Rights Campaign, Price was also quoted by the New York Times last year after marriage equality was legalized nationwide, saying that it was “not only a sad day for marriage, but a further judicial destruction of our entire system of checks and balances.”
If you’re wondering where Price stands on the issues regarding trans people, don’t worry he doesn’t respect them either. He has been a vocal critic to the Obama administration’s guidelines to schools regarding trans students, saying that they were “absurd.”
He also voted in favor of Constitutionally defining marriage between a man and a woman, and voted down a bill that would prohibit job discrimination based on sexual orientation. Price is also not a champion of women. Besides being a staunch opponent for reproductive laws, he voted down the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act according to Towleroad.
In other words, he’s giving Mike Pence a run for his money on being the worst member of the Trump administration for people who are women and/or LGBTQ.
